Their stems and leaves are much softer to the touch than oak’s foliage, and can be easily torn. The bark is much smoother and delicate to the eye compared to oak’s rough texture.

Sugar maple is very high BTU like red oak, red or soft maple is medium BTU like elm or cherry.

Cherry wood offers a unique burning experience that combines decent heat output with exceptional ambiance. Cherry will produce 20.0 million BTU’s per cord which isn’t the best when you compare it to oak or hard maple, but it’s really not all that bad either.

The older this tree gets, the more distinctive the bark becomes — turning more scaly and darker in color. Upon reaching maturity, the bark of black cherry trees begins to darken, becoming dark gray to nearly black, with an irregular, scaly appearance.
For younger cherry trees, the bark is lighter gray and much smoother, with distinct horizontal lenticels (pores that facilitate gas exchange). The wood itself has distinctive coloring: Cherry can often be identified because of its reddish-brown tone, which starts out as a lighter, pinkish-yellow hue that darkens after being exposed to sunlight.
