Contra Costa County Leads the Way with Innovative 2024 Wildfire Prevention Incentives – Making Tree Removal Affordable for Every Homeowner

As wildfire threats continue to intensify across California, Contra Costa County has taken decisive action in 2024, designating areas as “Very High” and “High” fire hazard severity zones and implementing comprehensive grant programs to help residents protect their properties. These initiatives represent a significant shift toward community-supported wildfire prevention, offering financial assistance that makes essential tree removal and vegetation management services accessible to homeowners who need them most.

Understanding Contra Costa County’s 2024 Wildfire Prevention Strategy

The Wildfire Conservation and Resilience Program at CCRCD provides technical assistance to individuals, communities and agencies to advance the goals of the Alameda and Contra Costa County Regional Wildfire Prevention Plan. This comprehensive approach recognizes that fire is a part of life in the Bay Area and at CCRCD we work to decrease the risk of destructive wildfire while facilitating controlled burning that restores ecosystems and enhances resilience to the compounding impacts of climate change.

The county’s strategy focuses on creating defensible space – the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs and any wildland area that surrounds it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it helps protect your home from catching fire.

Available Grant Programs and Incentives

The Contra Costa County Wildfire Mitigation Program is a program that is funded through Measure X and available throughout Contra Costa County. It is designed to fund the following types of projects and programs: Community chipping days are available to Firewise Communities or neighborhoods with at least ten homes participating in these fuel reduction efforts.

Key funding opportunities include:

Statewide Support Enhances Local Programs

Wildfire Prevention grants fund projects in and near fire threatened communities to increase the protection of people, structures, and communities. Projects to improve compliance with defensible space requirements as required by Public Resources Code Section 4291 (Projects eligible for CCI funds are low-income, disabled, or elderly households per CA requirements) receive priority consideration.

Depending on your eligibility and location, grant funding may cover: Professional brush clearing and vegetation management. Funding is limited and each county determines their own eligibility standards for grants. Most counties focus their grant funding on low-income homeowners with physical disabilities.

Property owners should also be aware that by Monday June, 3, this is the day by which every property owner—including residential, commercial and parcels of land—must cut down tall grasses and weeds in order to prevent grass fires and other wildfires from spreading quickly in our communities. Looking Ahead: A Safer Future for Contra Costa County

The Contra Costa Resource Conservation District (CCRCD) and partners are beginning a project to increase wildfire resilience in Eastern Contra Costa County. Under the California Vegetation Treatment Program (CalVTP), and in partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE), East Bay Regional Park District, California State Parks, Contra Costa Water District, and Contra Costa Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the CCRCD will develop a Project Specific Analysis (PSA) for 16,000 acres of grassland and oak woodland habitat. The PSA will act as a compliance tool for the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and allow for expedited implementation of wildfire resilience projects such as prescribed burning, prescribed herbivory, and mechanical fuel reduction treatments. In addition, over the next 5 years the CCRCD and CALFIRE will implement an assortment of the wildfire resilience projects outlined in the PSA on the East County project area.

Contra Costa County’s 2024 wildfire prevention initiatives represent more than just regulatory compliance – they embody a community-wide commitment to safety and resilience. By combining generous grant programs with professional tree removal services, residents now have unprecedented access to the tools and resources needed to protect their properties. Whether you’re a homeowner looking to create defensible space or a community group organizing fuel reduction efforts, these programs provide the financial support and professional expertise necessary to build a fire-safe future for Contra Costa County.
